About BLCKBOX Sim-Racing

Whats the purpose?

BLCKBOX Sim-Racing came about by accident. While searching for free mods to use as assetts in Assetto Corsa, one of our bright sparks developed a method to search the internet for AC mods, download them and catorgise them. At the time the individual was under the impression the packages he was receiving where opensource and free to download. It wasn't long before the extent of the "piracy" and copyright infringement was fully realised.

The partners at BLCKBOX were somewhat taken-a-back and decided to develop a system with which to compensate the original authors for their time. BLCKBOX Sim-Racing was the result.

Initially the site launched at the begining of May 2023 and featured over 1,000 tracks and more than 6,000 cars.

The goal was to try and control the narrative by catching google searches for free mods and then directing those doing the search directly to the author or original download source as provided by the original author in the assets meta tags. Many mods did not have this information set and as such were provided as a download direct from the site while the original author was tracked down the required information added to the assets meta data. There are still many mods that do not have this data and as such many are considered "lost" or discontinued. Such mods are listed in their archive format for historic purposes.

The secondary goal of the site was to develop and financial compensation fund which could be distributed among those contributors who have had their work illicitly copied. Currently we are continuing to track down the original authors of assets and developing several forms of fund generation from which to form a compensation fund.

All direct downloads from the site are tracked and the authors will eventually be linked to their respective assetts (where possible). We anticipate monthly distribution of the fund to be based proportionaly against the percentage (%) of downloads from registered users.

A subscription based membership will also be introduced to generate further funds to support this resouce and also contribute towards the fund.

Finally, on-line e-sports events will eventually require a small registration fee to be paid, this money will be used to compensate modders for the assets used in the events held.

In an ideal world resources like this would not be required, however, there are many dubious resources freely available on the internet, we're appealing to peoples conscience to do the right thing, whilst also attempting to prevent those with dubious intentions from exploitation.

We hope to appeal to the good nature of those seeking freebies and direct them towards the proper download path, but we also understand not everybody will be so good natured and as such we in turn hope the authors of the mods featured on this site do not feel we are taking advantage but providing a valuable resource.

Mods featured on this site are entirely sourced from dubious links sites and their version considered old or obsolete. We are unaware of any current mods being included although this may be a possibility as the majority of our system is automated.

In the future we plan to enable alerts to authors for new links found on dubious websites, this will be opt-in only, and may help in controlling the illicit distribution of content.
