The Abarth Punto Competizione was a promotional category of speed motorsport presented by Fiat Auto Argentina in 2011, but only put on track in 2012. It was presented as the successor to the Fiat Linea Competizione, which had been decommissioned in 2011, and was conceived with the dual objective of presenting a category developed from a fleet made up of high-performance units, as well as promote the Abarth Grande Punto model in Argentina, a radicalized version of the Fiat Grande Punto production model.
This category had been initially announced for the year 2012, but its inaugural championship began with the primitive units of the extinct Fiat Linea Competizione, the new Abarth Punto being presented effectively as of August 12, 2012, during the course of the seventh date of the 2012 season. On that occasion, the first driver to win would be the Buenos Aires Pablo Melillo, while the first champion in this category was ex-footballer Bruno Marioni.
Like its predecessor, the Abarth Punto Competizione is intended for amateur drivers and motor racing fans who wish to make their debut in professional motorsport practice. The car used to develop these competitions is the Abarth Punto EVO sports version, manufactured by Fiat and developed by Abarth in Italy, with implements developed to improve the performance of the units. Its main evolution lies in its impeller, which is developed by Abarth , this being a supercharged T-Jet engine with a Garret GT1446 turbocharger that leads it to deliver a power of 220 HP.
Throughout its history, this category developed a total of 4 full seasons between 2013 and 2016, while in 2012 and 2017 it developed partial seasons. Its activities ceased on October 1, 2017, when Fiat Argentina made the decision to reformulate it by changing its name to Fiat Competizione and replacing its vehicle fleet with one that brought the new Fiat Type II sedan as a representative model , in order to promote the entry of this model to the Argentine automotive market as of 2018 .
