In 2012, an Acciona R&D team of more than 20 people created the vehicle, which is capable of competing in adverse conditions without emitting carbon dioxide (CO2). The Acciona 100% EcoPowered competed for the first time in the Dakar 2015. Subsequently, a series of improvements were made to the vehicle: the vehicle's weight was lightened by 40%, eight packs of new, more powerful batteries were incorporated, 4x4 traction and a sequential gearbox that optimizes the behavior of the electric motor.
In October 2015, the Acciona 100% EcoPowered competed in the OiLibya Rally in Morocco, where it became the first zero-emission vehicle to finish an event on the World Rally Championship calendar. In January 2016, it competed again in the 2016 Dakar Rally. After completing 10 stages, he was disqualified for arriving late at the start of the eleventh stage. In November 2016, the Acciona 100% EcoPowered finished the OiLibya Rally Morocco for the second consecutive year. In January 2017, the Acciona 100% EcoPowered finished the Dakar Rally, becoming the first electric car to achieve this. Subsequently, the Acciona Ecopowered participated in the Italian Baja Rally in 2017, Baja Tijuana in the same year and Finke Rally in 2018 with Andrea Peterhansel as driver, Edu Blanco as team manager and Ariel Jaton as technical director of the project.
