When the huge twelve-cylinder engine with 5.7 liters of displacement in the Jaguar
The thunderous, almost animalistic roar that explodes from the two rather crudely made side exhaust pipes gets under your skin and ensures that every nerve in your body is at attention. It would be hard to imagine a greater contrast than the power of that earth-shattering engine that lies beneath the body of this sleekly elegant racing car, which, apart from its lurking stance and ludicrously wide Dunlop tires, is little different from the standard XJ-S, which was in every Jaguar showroom in the eighties.
Actually, the But the well-known Scottish racing driver and team owner Tom Walkinshaw discovered completely different attributes in the elongated coupé, such as the independent suspension, a powerful and reliable engine and extremely spacious wheel arches.
After convincing the top floor at Browns Lane to let him have a handful of XJ-S for the European Touring Car Championship, which had also adopted the new, stricter Group A regulations for the 1982 season, Walkinshaw and his brilliant drivers drove first victories. His team included Martin Brundle, Chuck Nicholson and Win Percy.
Originally, TWR's XJ-S wore the black stable color of sponsor Motul. For the 1984 season they received the later legendary livery in green and white. After narrowly losing the previous two championships, the Jaguars underwent a major overhaul. Once again Walkinshaw brought all his powers of persuasion to the negotiating table - this time with the motorsport governing body to ensure that his XJ-S could be equipped with Cosworth's high-performance valves from Formula 1. Together with the new pistons, the V12 now produced around 456 hp and turned quickly up to 7,300 rpm.
The subsequent success after these optimizations was overwhelming: with seven victories, three times even a triple podium, Walkinshaw secured the ETC championship in 1984. At the Spa 24 Hours, his big cats stormed to their first triumph in a long-distance race since Le Mans that year In 1957. It even traveled to Bathurst, Australia, where they promptly won, silencing critics from Down Under who said the XJ-S could barely handle the tight, endless curves of Mount Panorama.
“The XJ-S TWR was a one-off and incomparable to any of my other touring cars,” he remembers with affection. “The fact that this vehicle was so competitive is a testament to Tom Walkinshaw's sheer desire to achieve top performance while remaining as simple as possible. There was no point in driving the Jaguar below its potential. But if you pushed yourself to the physical limit, the car rewarded you. It was a great feeling and so much fun to drive and win with this XJ-S.”
Percy is well aware of the value of the XJ-S motorsport successes for Jaguar, as the manufacturer was in a somewhat precarious financial situation at the time. “It was an era when Jaguar was struggling - what TWR brought to the business was hugely important,” he says. “In fact, I have never seen a better demonstration of the motto “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” than when we competed with it at Bathurst. The Australians didn't think it was possible for us to win, but that's exactly what we achieved. The next day we drove into Sydney and people were literally lining up outside the Jaguar dealer to order an XJS. Years later at an event at the Jaguar factory, employees and those who had worked there came up to me to thank me for making this model so popular. Thanks to this sales success, many were able to service their mortgages.”
