「RE (ロータリーエンジン) ピュアスポーツ」というコンセプトのもと、マツダがロータリーエンジンの特徴を最大限に活かしながら開発したFD3S。91年12月に登場したこの3代目RX-7は、年を追うごとに進化を見せ、翌年の92年10月にはFC時代の∞にあたるタイプRZが300台限定モデルとして発売された。引き続き93年10月には、国産車で初めて17インチタイヤが採用され、前後異径サイズのタイヤを履いたタイプRZが150台限定発売された。その後95年3月、95年モデルの発売を機にこの超スパルタンなタイプRZが標準モデルに昇格したのである。
そして96年1月に3度目となるマイナーチェンジを受け登場したこのタイプRZは、93年8月から95年3月まで発売されていたタイプR-IIと同じく2シーターとされ、車両重量に関してもタイプRSの1280kgよりも30kg軽い1250kgを達成しているのがポイント。
搭載されるエンジンは新開発のシーケンシャルツインターボを組み合わせた13B-REW水冷直列2ローターエンジンだ。このシーケンシャルツインターボはエンジンの回転数と負荷に応じて、低速で1基、高速で2基のターボをコンピューターでコントロールするシステムで、96年1月のエンジン変更以降、265ps／6500rpmの最高出力と30.0kg-m／5000rpmの最大トルクを発生する。さらに、このタイプRZが走りのグレードに位置付けられる最大の特徴は、ガス加圧式モノチューブ構造を持つビルシュタインタイプのダンパーが標準装備されていることだろう。また、最高のハンドリング性能を引き出すため、コイルスプリングのセッティングはハードタイプが採用されている。
ゆえにその走りはFD3Sの中では最も切れ味の鋭いもの。まさにエッジオブザナイフといった感じの走りを味わわせてくれる。

The FD3S was developed by Mazda under the concept of "RE (Rotary Engine) Pure Sports," making the most of the characteristics of the rotary engine.
