Spoken-word Dutch sounds a lot like recorded English played backward, just without the satanic messages. In Dutch, they're out in the open. "Donkervoort," for example, translates roughly into "Grab your Gouda, because I'm going to murder you in the face."
Actually, it doesn't. But it might as well. The Dutch-built D8 GTO doesn't hide its intent to maim. If the car calls to mind a Lotus 7 with 'roid rage, that's because it basically is; Donkervoort got its start in the last century building aluminum-bodied 7 clones. Except that where Lotus's Colin Chapman preferred things light and simple, Donkervoort likes its cars light and positively, completely, absurdly powerful.
For the D8 GTO, the zany Dutchies borrowed the delightful turbo five-cylinder from Audi's TT RS. (Expensive, small, 4 seconds to 60, sounds like a Group B car with a head cold.) And then Donkervoort gave it 20 more hp because ... why not? At a claimed 1532 lbs, it's not like the carbon-fiber-bodied two-seater is heavy. If you were somehow able to park two D8 GTOs on the same scale, you still wouldn't have the mass of a single TT RS.
Donkervoort claims that the GTO explodes through the 62-mph mark in 2.8 seconds and hits double that speed in an additional 5.8 seconds. Its maker says aerodynamic drag keeps the car from going any faster than 168 mph, at which point the atmosphere is likely screaming for mercy.
