Lotus 56B - former 56 Indy car.
Unique AWD F1 car powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 gas turbine engine. One of the most unique race car ever.
The car itself was an entirely new and more advanced design which introduced a distinctive aerodynamic wedge-shaped body rather than a cigar-shape.
The Lotus 56 pumped out 500 HP at 45,000 RPM. With no gearbox and clutch being required, the gamble was clearly worth it. Turbine engines unlike ICEs cannot utilize engine braking. And so, slowing down was completely up to the brakes. Usage of standard brakes would result in overheating and failure. So, the onboard brakes of the Lotus 56 were short solid driveshafts with GKN constant velocity joints to the wheels
The car was almost unbeatable on the wet track, what does make sense, but suffered a lot on dry conditions. No engine braking, huge acceleration lag, extra weight and super hungry engine.
