Jaguar withdrew from racing in the late 1950’s and stayed away for nearly two decades. In 1975 the company began to show interest again, especially in U.S. racing. Group 44 Inc. had been Jaguar’s motor sport contractor in the U.S. for years and, the early 1980’s when Jaguar decided to participate in a new IMSA GTP class that was being formed, it was only logical that Group 44 Inc build their entry.
A number of manufacturers participated in the class, including Ford, Chevrolet, Buick and BMW, but the only cars that provided any competition for Porsche were the Jaguars. Ford, for example, won only one event. Jaguar won twelve. Group 44 Inc’s contract with Jaguar called for Group 44 Inc to return Jaguar to Le Mans, which they did in 1984/85.
The original 1982 car tested with the Jaguar /John Huber V12/60° 2v SOHC 6 x Webber carburated 5.3 liter engine (found in an XJS road car). It won its first race in the IMSA GTP class at Road America. It was later upgraded with an enlarged 6.0 liter V-12 Jaguar, with Aluminum Block & Heads and Electronic Fuel Injection.
For the first time since 1959, Jaguar now made its first official appearance at Le Mans when Bob Tullius' Group 44 team brought over its two Jaguar XJR-5's powered by 6.0 litre Jaguar V12 engines from America. Group 44 racing, with the full backing of Jaguar, would compete in the IMSA GTP class. Before the decision to enter the race had been made, Jaguar had been concerned about the competitiveness of the XJR-5's against the turbocharged Porsche's and Ferrari powered Lancia's, especially with regard to top speed on the 6 km (3.7 mi) Mulsanne Straight. But those fears were put to rest when the 600 hp (447 kW) cars were clocked at over 200 mph (322 km/h) during the 24 Hours of Daytona in February.
